We sell original Audubon prints and decorative china. We carry octavo prints and folio prints from Audubon's Birds of America, and octavo and folio prints from the Quadrupeds of North America We sell antique color-plate books, plus a good selection of reference and trade books on Audubon and natural history art. In ceramics, we generally carry items with Audubon or natural history motifs, including china from the Birds of America series by Adams, Alfred Meakin, and Royal Worcester. Finally, we are pleased to have a selection of natural history prints and books by other authors and artists. Below we briefly describe many of our items. By visiting the appropriate page of our website, you will find much more information and photos or links to photos. If you can't find what you want, feel free to contact us for some ideas. WHAT DO YOU WANT? I am interested in prints or color plate books. I am interested in china. I am interested in books (other than color plate books). In this range, we have some very reasonably priced decorative antique bird prints (circa late 1700s to early 1800s). These small prints are copper plate engravings with beautiful hand coloring. We also have a selection of original hand-colored Audubon octavo birds (mostly later edition but also some firsts) and Audubon octavo quads in this price range. The Audubon octavo prints are about 6 to 7 inches by 10 to 11 inches, much smaller than the larger and more expensive Audubon folio prints. The majority of Audubon octavo birds and almost all Audubon octavo quads fall in this price range. Our selection of birds include both first edition and most later-edition prints, while the quad prints are from both first and later editions. Looking for a lot of bang for your decorating buck? Check out our original Gould Hummingbirds and hand-colored engravings and stone lithographs from the wonderful Porter and Coates 1871 edition of Alexander Wilson's American Ornithology (as extended by Charles Lucien Bonaparte). All these prints are folio-sized, but not as large as the Audubon folios. Remarkably, some Audubon folio quads of smaller mammals also fall into this price category. These are large hand-colored lithographs by J. T. Bowen, produced from 1844 to 1848. Overall, the prints in this group are in very good to excellent condition with spectacular color. If you've always wanted to own an Audubon folio, but hesitated because of cost, you should give these a look. Anyone who wants high-quality well-priced Audubon Havell Edition facsimile or reproduction prints should consider Princeton Audubon first. We are now selling these very fine prints, and recommend them as giving the most bang for your decorating buck of anything we know in the market. Please visit our Princeton page for prices and selection. Audubon folio plates are large and rare prints that can easily become the focal point of any room in which they are displayed. The best of both first and later edition octavo birds can be found in this price range. Prices for our Audubon folio bird prints typically begin at $2500 (unless trimmed). Included in our selection of bird folio prints are both Havells (hand-colored etchings with engraving and aquatint that date from about 1830) and Biens (chromolithographs that date to about 1860). Our animal prints are from Audubon's Imperial Folio; these are large hand-colored lithographs that date from the 1840s. We also have some beautiful Gould hummingbirds, some 1st and 2nd edition prints from Alexander Wilson's American Ornithology , and a bird print by Prideaux John Selby in this price range. Also in this range are some of the best Wilson images from our Porter and Coates 1871 edition of Alexander Wilson's American Ornithology. We offer single pieces in a wide range of prices from four lines of china decorated with Audubon Birds of America motifs. These include the beautiful Meakin Birds of America series (including many different types of pieces), and our most popular line, the wonderfully decorative Birds of America dinner plates by Adams. We also offer decorative plates from a limited edition series by Royal Worcester. Our latest addition to the curio cabinet area include lunch plates, cups and saucers from the lovely Audubon Birds series by Hutschenreuther. We also offer a few interesting pieces from other ceramic lines. These are located on the hodgepodge shelf. Before buying china, be sure to look over important safety information on the use of older china. We occasionally have special pieces in the Meakin line (e.g., this serving platter we briefly had in stock) that are in this range. In Meakin or Hutschenreuther, you could buy a full set of 8 cups and saucers plus luncheon plates. In Royal Worcester, you might be able to get all eight designs depending on what we have in stock. Before buying china, be sure to look over important safety information on the use of older china.
A full set of our most popular china, the Adams Audubon Birds of America plates with the floral border, would fall into this range. Before buying china, be sure to look over important safety information on the use of older china. We offer a wonderful collection of reference and art books on Audubon and Audubon's art. We have something to fit every budget. If you are unsure what to buy, contact us with information on what you are looking for, and we will explain the strengths and weaknesses of each book, particularly those that reproduce Audubon's art. Some of our reference and or art books fall into this category. A good example would be the wonderful book by Ron Tyler detailing the story of the octavo edition of The Birds of America. This excellent and out-of-print book is a must-have for any serious octavo collector. Another book that is much sought after by octavo collectors is the Thunder Bay Press book Audubon's Birds of America. This excellent art book reproduces a first edition set of the octavo edition birds. Another great book for lovers of Audubon's art is the Welcome Rain (or Laurel Glen or Wordsworth) edition of Birds of America, the best book available for Havell Edition prints. Because they are hard to find, copies with excellent dust jackets are above $100, but copies with less pristine or no dust jackets are available for under $100. We sometimes offer color-plate books in this price range. Right now we have available a wonderful volume from William Jardine's Naturalist's Library series, The Natural History of Parrots by P. J. Selby. This book is complete with over thirty hand-colored engravings by W.H. Lizars after the great Edward Lear. In this price range, we have a nice collection of very special and rare books, including text volumes for some important works. Among our many offerings, we have a nice copy of Audubon's Synopsis of the Birds of North America. Even if we do not have exactly what you want listed on the website, we can usually help you locate it, so be sure to contact us with your wish lists.
