PL 33 American Goldfinch. Watermark lower right quadrant J Whatman 1832. Sheet around 38 inches x 25-5/8 inches. Part of an incomplete set of three volumes owned by The Young Men's Association of the City of Buffalo, acquired prior to 8 February 1838 (see Waldemar Fries, p. 237). In 1886, the institutional name was changed to The Buffalo Library, which became part of The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library system in 1954. The Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences acquired the three volumes in 1996 in exchange for the Milestones of Science collection. It sold the three volumes as a single lot at Christie's New York on April 21, 1997 (Lot 5). Some of these prints were acquired by a wealthy entrepreneur and art collector in Dallas, whose recent financial and legal difficulties has led to the sale at auction of personal possesions.
Beautiful original color, unusally fine in terms of the colors in the thistle and foliage. Sheet in overall excellent condition with some toning (mostly in margin areas, some minor staining or soiling in plate area). $14,000.
