Donovan's The Natural History of British Birds

Just added, I have a very good selection of colorful prints from Edward Donovan's Natural History of British Birds. Donovan was a British naturalist and collector who owned and operated a small museum and published several illustrated works describing and depicting birds, fish, insects, and plants. Published circa 1794 to 1819 in 10 volumes with a total of 244 plates, these prints are hand-colored copperplate engravings on Whatman paper (a few prints with partial watermarks as expected). The prints measure approximately 9-1/8 x 5-1/2 inches.

The plates are in good to excellent condition, some with toning or foxing, and a few with minor edge wear or other issues. Some of the plates have small pieces of mounting tape attached to the back. The thumbnail scans will give you a good idea of the relative paper tone which ranges from light cream to tanned. Hand-coloring is generally excellent with with strong colors. I obtained these plates with some of the corresponding text pages. These helped me identify the birds in most plates, but some plates lacked text. In these cases, I did my best to match the birds to Donovan's nomenclature using online references. In a few cases, I could not locate Donovan's name for the bird. In these cases, the birds are listed by the current common name if I could match the image based on appearance. Some of these birds are no longer native to Britain, or were mistakenly assumed by Donovan to be so.

These prints make charming groups. Priced to reflect condition, the toned ones are particular values if you do not mind prints with age on them.

Goldsmith's A History of the Earth and Animated Nature

These beautiful hand-colored engravings (most based on the art of J. Stewart) are from the Blackie & Son editions of Oliver Goldsmith's A History of the Earth and Animated Nature with additional writings by Georges Cuvier (Baron Cuvier). The prints are from several different editions of the work, published from the 1850s to the 1870s.  All prints measure about 9-1/2 x 6-1/2 inches, and are in generally very good condition with age toning and varying degrees of foxing or soiling. The illustrated titles and animals appear first, then the birds, followed by reptiles and insects. The selection concludes with engraved portraits of Oliver Goldsmith and Baron Cuvier.

Hand-colored Bird Plates by Jakob Schmuzer

From an edition of Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm's Unterhaltungen aus der Naturgeschichte (Discourse of Natural History), 1795 to early 1800s.  This rare German natural history is well illustrated with delightful copper plate engravings. My selection includes exotic-looking birds. The plates are signed in the stone "JJ Schmuzer" or "JJS."  The complete Natural History series included 27 volumes. Jakob Schmuzer appears to have used an X as his middle initial in some volumes of this work. Wove paper, 4.5 inches by 7 inches, some with watermarks.

These small but charming prints were from a single collector, and include in the margins old prices, a blind stamp (LIBRIS MW), and a red ink stamp with initials MW outside of the plate mark.  Additional stamps appear on the backs of some prints.  In overall very good condition, some prints show their age in the form of moderate soiling, handling creases, bending or chipping on edges and corners and the occasional small stain. Some retain faint ghosts of penciled notations (usually in the margin) and old prices. Please review the scans at full size. Beautiful hand-coloring.
