    Audubon prints: image size

This is a subsection of a larger discussion on Audubon prints.  The information presented here is not sufficient for authenticating a print.  To begin from the beginning, please read the overview.

On plates of the large mammals of the Imperial Folio, we have noticed that sizes are more likely to be missing if the animal is credited to John Woodhouse Audubon or if the print was published following the elder Audubon's withdrawal from the project.  There are many prints of larger mammals (particularly the deer and bears) in Volumes II and III that lack size information.  Although some of these plates are credited to the elder Audubon in the folio edition, almost all of them were "reassigned" to John Woodhouse Audubon in the octavo edition.
