    Audubon prints: sheet size

This is a subsection of a larger discussion on Audubon prints.  The information presented here is not sufficient for authenticating a print.  To begin from the beginning, please read the overview.

The number of facsimile prints has greatly increased in the last ten years.  New editions are being added every year. The complete Havell Edition of Birds of America was first reprinted in 1972 (the Amsterdam Edition) and again in 1985 (the Abbeville Edition).  Both of these editions were printed using offset lithography (see the section on color for how to distinguish printed color from hand coloring) and have distinctive watermarks.  For many years these two editions were the only complete reissues of the Havell Edition, but beginning in the early 2000's a new Giclée edition (called the Centennial Edition) began publication.  It is the intention of the publisher to eventually offer all 435 images; as of 2010, they are more than halfway to that goal.  Besides these three complete editions, many other publishers have put out full-sized replicas (digital or photomechanical) of selected bird prints.

Although some references state that there have never been full-sized reproductions of the Imperial Folio prints, this is not true. Southart-Parkway Imperial Edition, first introduced in the 1980's, is comprised of 12 full-size quadruped prints including

  • Red Texan Wolf
  • Nine-banded Armadillo
  • Collared Peccary
  • Texan Hare
  • Ocelot
  • Jaguar
  • Grey Fox
  • Virginia Deer
  • Raccoon
  • Say's Squirrel
  • Common Deer (Fawn)
  • Grey Rabbit

We have some of these prints available at great prices in the Southart/Parkway area of the print room.  Newly available in 2010, Rare-prints is now issuing Giclée facsimiles of Audubon's mammals. Other facsimile series are also available.
