Description

Uncolored Havell prints are rare. This particular impression seems to have been taken from the copper plate in its final or near final state. The copper plate was originally engraved by W. H. Lizars of Edinburgh. Lizars did the first “draft” of Plates 1 though 10 before Audubon changed printers, moving the project to the London firm of Robert Havell and Son

Robert Havell (the son) was a master printer who supervised the printing and coloring of the Birds from 1827 through its completion in 1838. Over time, some of the earliest plates, including PL 6, went through many changes, some subtle, some more obvious. One of the charming additions that Havell made to this image was the addition of a snail on the ground. The snail gives a focus to the great interest in the ground being shown by the two right-most chicks.
