1st Edition

Audubon's Octavo Birds
First Edition (1840-1844)

All prints guaranteed authentic and from the first octavo edition of The Birds of America (based on either first-hand knowledge of the source or on widely accepted authentication criteria). Each octavo print comes with a certificate of authenticity (COA) that gives background on the series and the specific print. Size varies, but is typically 10-1/4 inches x 6-1/4 inches. I will send the original text pages if available; otherwise you will receive a copy of Audubon’s text in an alternate format.

If you are interested in a print that is not currently available, please contact me and I will locate one for you. I try to keep this page up to date, but there may be errors. If you are purchasing a print as a gift or with a deadline, it is best to confirm availability. Given sufficient lead time and budget, I can obtain any print for you.

Please contact me for condition reports, scans or information on exact dimensions. Your browser may shrink photos to fit the browser window; if so, click on the photos to see them at full size. For matted prints, prices are for the prints with or without mat. For framed prints, prices are for the prints as framed. Framed and matted prints will incur a shipping surcharge.

In many cases the modern name of the birds and/or plants is different than on the plates. Where the difference in the bird name is significant, I have made an attempt to include the modern name of the bird, but this is an ongoing effort. If you are looking for a particular bird and cannot match it, please contact me and I’ll try to identify the correct plate for you.

Prints are listed in order of plate number and grouped by volume. To see scans of the actual print for sale, click on the plate number/bird name. Scans provide only a general idea of condition, and can be misleading on certain issues such as paper tone. I am happy to prepare a detailed condition report for any print that interests you and try to take a new photo or adjust the scan to more accurately reflect the print. Please specify edition as well as plate number and bird name. Visit the ordering page for answers to questions about my guarantee, methods of payment, shipping, and other policies.

All prints are subject to prior sale. Photos shown on this page are illustrative, reflecting both current and past inventory — the specific prints in the photos may no longer be available. All prints that are currently available are listed with prices, and with the print names linked to a photo of the ACTUAL print. I also maintain photos of prints that are sold so you can see what each print looks like.
