Painted by John James Audubon in stages beginning in 1820 during a trip up the Mississippi river. Audubon first rendered the hen in pastel, later adding the chicks using watercolors and completed the painting by adding a background in oil paint.

Plate numbers that include an “A” were not used as part of The Birds of America.
